Description: | Please join us for Chantry Singers’ next event, which will mark the departure of our current director of music, Roy Rashbrook, after 20 years and 60 concerts. For this, we will once again be blending the new with a familiar old favourite. Fauré’s Requiem really needs no introduction. A beautifully intense yet reserved work, it has been a mainstay of the choral repertoire ever since its completion in 1890. Although later re-orchestrated, Fauré’s original instrumentation is a masterpiece of sombre delicacy. Instead of the usual string section, Fauré makes use of the darker colours of divided violas and cellos, horns and harp. In 2017, the charity "Making Music” commissioned Danyal Dhondy to compose a piece as a companion to the Fauré Requiem, using exactly the same orchestration and soloists. “Still the Sirens” offers its audience an opportunity for reflective contemplation, exploring the great political upheavals of our time through texts drawn from a variety of poets including A.E.Housman, John Donne and Emily Dickinson. As far as we know, our concert will be the 3rd ever performance of this piece. |
